Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn at Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father's death in the role of a carnival barker when Ruth was just a young girl, she had to help support the family working both as a maid and server. Ruth was a student and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. She only attended school for two years before taking a break to pursue her acting career.
